Barcelona Urban transformations. Procedures, tools and project strategies
Zagreb 08.05.2025
BROWNFIELDS PLANNING, Planning Methods and Tool for the Urban Revitalization of Brownfield Areas Conference. Institute of Physical Planning of the city of Zagreb.
Interventions in brownfields should not be approached as isolated new urban developments, seeking uniqueness and maximum economic profitability, as if they were oases in the City, but as one more piece that should be integrated into the existing City and that should provide habitability conditions not only in its area but also improvements for the City as a whole. They are an opportunity to contribute to a new urban model, providing social housing, diversity of uses, connecting green infrastructure, providing public facilities, and revaluing architectural heritage. Examples such as the transformation of the Montjuïc exhibition centre or the former Mercedes factory in Barcelona are good examples of this strategy.
The transformation of brownfields that require long periods for their planning, management and execution, obliges us to also manage the time in the meantime. That is why it is important to think of actions that allow the space to be used during the process and to define progressive execution processes that allow the transformation to be properly scheduled and assimilated. The transformation process of the Marina del Prat Vermell neighbourhood in Barcelona is a good example of how to transform a large industrial area progressively.
