Quality of Life: Remaking the post-industrial city, The Academy of Urbanism Conference, Manchester
Barcelona’s post-industrial transformation began with the 1992 Olympic Games, which laid the foundations for a new urbanism focused on the tertiary economy: opening the city to the sea, creating new public spaces and facilities, and establishing new centralities.
The 22@ district in Poblenou transformed former industrial spaces into new areas for innovation and tertiary activities. This process put Barcelona on the international stage, but it also created new problems and challenges: tourist overcrowding, international investment that has driven up rental prices, loss of local scale, lost industrial heritage, and limited public housing.
