Although schools are among the most important facilities in the city, the quality of their surroundings has not been a priority. At present, we observe that many school entrances face narrow, insufficient sidewalks, without trees or vegetation, on streets congested with vehicles—unhealthy and dangerous spaces that have prioritized car movement over that of children and people.
In recent years, many cities have launched programmes that question the characteristics and functioning of school environments and propose a shift in priorities through their transformation.
This document is conceived and designed as a useful tool to help municipalities promote and develop programmes for improving school environments as a strategy for urban regeneration.
The content is structured into three sections. First, a methodological proposal to analyse the condition of school surroundings from multiple perspectives: architectural, urban, environmental, and social. Second, an analysis of the current situation of schools in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. And finally, intervention strategies to improve school environments and reverse the current situation.
