Let’s Protect the Schools

Barcelona, 2019-2023

Chief Architect of the Barcelona City Council

Schools, where children spend a large part of their time, become the most sensitive spaces in the city and therefore must be given priority protection from pollution —both air and noise— and from traffic-related risks.
In 2020, the Barcelona City Council launched the “Protegim les Escoles” (Protecting Schools) program with the aim of transforming the urban environments of educational centers to make them safer and healthier.
Over the course of three years, the surroundings of 218 schools were improved, benefiting 85,000 students. In total, 35,000 m² of asphalt were converted into new areas for rest and children’s play in front of schools.
